Product Description
This family of unique CF-IDE Hard Drive Adapters is designed to enable one or two Compact Flash (CFI/II) media to be used as direct replacement for the 2.5" IDE hard drive. As a result, any equipment, such as Notebook computer, that uses a 2.5" IDE hard drive can be easily converted to use the low power and shock resistant CF media. Once installed, the CF appears as an ordinary hard drive to any OS and can be configured as a boot device. The Dual CF-IDE Hard Drive Adapter contains a second CF slot for the slave position of the IDE channel, allowing increased storage capacity with the same low power consumption and solid-state benefits of the CF card.
User Reviews:
Not quite what it should be
The product will not support two microdrives because of physical issues with the thickness of the drives and locations of the offset slots. I did get this to work with one 8Gb microdrive, but then it would not fit into my old ultra light Dell laptop because it was too thick. It is working fine in my Dell CPx laptop and runs silently, but just a bit sluggish.
Great Idea!
I used this card with a 4GB CF card on a 6 year old Toshiba laptop. The machine runs quiet and battery lasts longer. Highly recommended!
DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM
Do not buy this item if you are even thinking about using this as a drop in replacement for a laptop hard drive. I spent 3 weekends+ going through various installs, research and re-installs - emailing "tech support" at Addonics and getting absolutely nowhere. After spending a lot of money on the CF cards to go with this unit, at least I can still reuse those in a PCMCIA adapter or something....
A Neat Little Gizmo
One of these, together with two high capacity CF cards equals a pretty good home brewed 2.5" Solid State Drive. I cheaped out on the CF cards, so the performance of my laptop is suboptimal in some respects. Installation time for new software is especially awful. However, on the whole, the performance of the laptop is improved. Bootup time is improved by better than 50%. Battery endurance is improved around 20%. Your mileage may vary, of course. Best of all, my laptop is completely silent most of the time now. Much less fan noise, no clicking read head, no whirring drive. If you have a couple of fast CF cards lying around, one of these gizmos will turn them into a perfectly fine Solid State IDE drive. If you don't have the cards on hand, it might make most sense to wait a few months and buy a purpose-built SSD; prices are falling fast now.
